It is hard to tell what "should be" and "shouldn't be". The greatest expectation that has disappointed me lately is the lack of mentors. It appears that people are too busy, too tired, too ignorant to gain an opportunity here. I can now say that after 3-4 years of searching I believe that I have found in an 84 year old gentleman the mentor I have been looking for. Where do we go with tough questions, things that are hard to talk about with family, spouse, friend, etc. How in the world can we learn from past experience when we have little to none of our own. Mentor, please mentor.

Oh Yeah! We all have different evaluations of them. Some would say that he is a great guy, others would have to disagree. What is our real determiner of whether someone is good or bad? Most often it is the opportunity to get away and enjoy the outdoors...fishing, canoeing, hiking. But, I was thinking today about church attendance. Do people look forward to summer to even get a break from church? Could it be possible that the "things" that we get so involved in and that eat up our time has a good dose of Christianity in there? Are we so busy that people can't wait to relax? Can't say I have come to any groundbreaking discoveries. Ironically, the question of God's Will came up the other night in a leadership meeting, and I said, "I think that we have to fall in love with the search for His will." In a sense, I believe we need to make the search the end and not the means. So now I am being made to live those words and not just say them. This is an easier "said" than "done" situation.

Legacy or No Legacy? That is the Question

I have been doing some reading lately on Leadership and other topics. I have come across the idea that our purpose in the end of things is to leave a legacy. I agree in some part that it is my responsibility to do some torch passing. I need to set standards and live them for myself but also for the common good of others and especially those close to me.
Although, if by leaving a legacy I am just interested in people remembering what a good guy I was and all of the good things that I have done, I'm not sure that is what I am interested in. I think that I might be better suited to be just a bit forgettable as long as God takes my place in the remembrance. I worry to many times that we our such ego driven people that we hate the idea of being forgotten about and in some strange way I wonder if we feel that it might be unfair if people move on and act as if business is as usual after we pass on. Of course, we wouldn't say it was unfair. That would tip our hand. Selfish. We would say, "oh of course I expect things to move on without me". Do we really mean it? Is it the money? Is it the good looks and popularity? It seems to me that we have entered an unprecedented time of celebrity awe. We have been going to the chiropractor for a couple of years now. Our kids get adjusted as well as us. Well, our daughter who was three at the time used to have this game with the doc, and she would say that she had popcorn in her as he would adjust her. Not so odd right? Then she started to associate them with colors and has continued. She will say, "Oh, that was a blue popcorn today", or "Oh, that was a yellow and a red". Think there is any connection at all??? Colors and certain vertebrae? You know one of those times in life like, "I could have died", "I have lost everything", or situations like what the people are facing in the wake of the hurricane. I also came seconds away from witnessing a car crash out in front of our church today. What would happen to some people without Wake up calls? Would we, in a sense, sleep our life away and never come to grips with what truly matters in life? Could we live without them? Where do we place the credit for them? Is it just LIFE? God? Nature? just the way things are? It is odd how a time like this can totally change your perspective for the day. type='text'>No one ever has a greater day than that of their own funeral

Have you ever noticed that no matter the person, generally, everybody gets a great send off into eternity. I mean you could have been a real jerk and people still come around this event and say great things about you. The exception is of course the murderer, rapist, etc. But even then there is still family that look on the brighter side if there is one. I struggle with this because I have been to funerals where all these great things have been said about a person and then the real story comes out later over the potato salad at the dinner that has been so nicely prepared in their honor. Just seems weird to me. Discovery Ministries takes you through some challenge course things and this year we did the climbing wall. Well, afterwards as we were debriefing the experience one of the instructors said something like this, "When we can turn aside our natural inclinations we can rely on the supernatural". Not really heavy stuff, but it hit me how my reactions to situations and circumstances are often very natural or normal, but if I could push my natural self aside I might be able to experience more of the supernatural.
